PGA Coaching
Level 1:
The Level 1 Coaching Certificate will provide individuals with the knowledge and competence to assist more qualified coaches, delivering an interest in golf coaching, who wishes to work alongside other qualified coaches (for example a golf professional) to provide basic technical coaching to beginner golfers. Prior to attending a Level 1 course all candidates will receive a course pack that includes all the resources required to complete the qualification. From receiving this resource pack, which includes a Home Study Workbook, the Level 1 course takes around five weeks to complete. During this time candidates will be expected to read through the Home Study Workbook in preparation for a two-day practical course that will involve relevant assessments of coaching sessions as well as a 45 minute multiple choice questionnaire. At all stages of the course candidates will be given best practice guidance.
Course Entry Requirements:
Prior to registration for the ASQ Level 1 PGA Certificate in Coaching Golf, the candidate must:
a. Have a commitment to attend all of the specified course dates
b. Be at least 16 years of age
Throughout the delivery and assessment of this qualification, candidates will be required to consistently demonstrate and apply the correct technical models for the full range of applicable shots. This means that although candidates will not be required to have any specific handicap, they will need to be able to demonstrate an appropriate level of playing ability. It should be noted by all candidates that on successful completion of the ASQ Level 1 PGA Certificate in Coaching Golf they will be required to undertake relevant Child Protection training prior to their deployment as a golf coach. They will also be required to undergo a Criminal Records Check. This check and the child protection training will be linked to the PGA Coaching Licence (new scheme to be launched during 2007).

PGA Level 1 Coaching
In line with United Kingdom Coaching certificate (UKCC) requirements, the PGA has been chosen by the National Governing Bodies of golf in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, to lead on the development of coaching qualifications and develop a career coaching pathway for golf.
WHY become involved ?
This is the first qualification of the coaching pathway and will enable you to assist Level 2 Coaches delivering aspects of sessions to beginners, usually children and normally under direct supervision. (nb. this qualification is a pre-requisite of the Level 2 qualification).
WHO is it designed for ?
The Level 1 golf coach qualification is ideal for parents, interested volunteers, sports leaders and school teachers. Candidates need a basic understanding of golf, must be at least 16 years of age upon application and must be vetted and deemed as safe to work with children.
WHAT will I be able to do ?
As a PGA Level 1 coach you will play a very important role in assisting a more qualified coach. You will be able to interpret session plans and deliver aspects within that plan, ensuring that the relevant coaching points are covered and participants are safe and engaged throughout. You will learn about communication, demonstration and positioning – as well as skills-challenges and the importance of progression within a coaching session. Throughout your training emphasis will be placed on making the sessions safe and fun for all involved.
WHEN can I start Coaching ?
To coach you need a licence to coach. The licence confirms that you are suitable and insured to coach. To maintain the public liability insurance cover the licence is renewable annually.
To obtain a licence you must:
- Satisfactorily complete the assessed PGA Level 1 training course
- Attend a Safeguarding & Protecting Children workshop
- Be vetted and deemed safe to work with children which will entail obtaining an enhanced certificate from the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB)
HOW are the courses delivered ?
This qualification is competency based. The training is split into two distinctive areas, which comprise of the following:
Home Study – This element of the course is where you will develop your knowledge. The purpose of this is to make the contact time as practical as possible. By undertaking an element of home study, the PGA tutors will be able to combine your newly acquired knowledge with the practicalities of delivery.
Tutor contact time – This is delivered by PGA Tutors normally over 2 consecutive days. In the early stages of the first day there is a multiple choice assessment of your knowledge and understanding of the home study materials. The remaning time will be a combination of tutor-led opportunities combined with the practical delivery of micro-coaching sessions to your peers during which you will undergo continual assessment. Whenever you demonstrate competence within a particular area, your PGA tutors will recognise this and credit you throughout the PGA tutor contact time,. There will be opportunities to conduct individual and group reviews, helping you to develop an action plan for your next micro-coaching session.
HOW much do I pay ?
The cost of the course and home study pack is £210. This also covers processing the evidence to support your licence to operate as a coach. issueing the certificate, the licence and the first year’s public liability insurance.
